In English the adjectives generally go before the nouns they modify.  In Spanish, adjectives usually come after the noun they describe.  However, the adjectives  cuánto, mucho, and poco go before the noun they modify or describe.

Cuánto is used to ask how many? or how much?
 

 

Cuánto is an interrogative adjective, i.e. it is used to ask a question.  Since it is an interrogative (question word) it must carry an accent mark.
 

 

Like other adjectives, cuánto changes to agree with the noun it describes or modifies.

The feminine form is created by changing the -o to an -a
