Preterite of ser and estar
  both mean to be
  are not interchangeable
  used in different context and situations
  both are irregular in the preterite
  do not have accent marks

ser
  Ser in the preterite
  preterite of ser identical to preterite of ir; meaning is derived from context
   
ser  (to be)
(yo) fui blank (nosotros/as) fuimos
(tú) fuiste (vosotros/as) fuisteis
(él, ella, Ud.) fue (ellos, ellas, Uds.) fueron
  Use the preterite of ser
    to say where an event took place  
      La competición de esquí aquático fue en el lago. The water ski competition was at the lake.
    to say how someone did  
      A nosotros nos fue bastante bien. For us it went pretty well.
    to sum up what someone or something is like  
      Mi abuelo fue muy simpático y cómico. My grandfather was very nice and funny.
      El mes pasado fue difícil para mí. The past month was difficult for me.

  Estar in the preterite
   
estar (to be)
(yo) estuve blank (nosotros/as) estuvimos
(tú) estuviste (vosotros/as) estuvisteis
(él, ella, Ud.) estuvo (ellos, ellas, Uds.) estuvieron
  Use the preterite of estar
    to say where someone or something was  
      Estuve en el colegio hasta las siete de la noche. I was at school until 7:00 P.M.
      Mis zapatos estvuieron debajo de mi cama. My shoes were under my bed.
    to say how someone felt for a certain period of time  
      Todos nosotros estuvimos contentos después de ganar. We were all very happy after winning.
    to give your opinion on how something was  
      El examen de español estuvo muy fácil. The Spanish test was very easy.
