preterite tense

The preterite of verbs like caer

  Some -er and -ir verbs have a stem that ends in a vowel.
  In the preterite, the i of the third person endings changes to y
   

-ió  ® -yó

third person singular      
   

-ieron  ® -yeron

third person singular      
  In all other forms of the preterite, the í has a written accent mark to show that the í is pronounced as a separate syllable.
   
caerse   (to fall)
(yo) me caí blank (nosotros/as) nos caímos
(tú) te caíste (vosotros/as) os caísteis
(él, ella, Ud.) se cayó (ellos, ellas, Uds.) se cayeron

  Leer follows the same pattern as caerse in the preterite.
   
leer   (to read)
(yo) leí blank (nosotros/as) leímos
(tú) leíste (vosotros/as) leísteis
(él, ella, Ud.) leyó (ellos, ellas, Uds.) leyeron

  In the preterite, construir has the same third person endings as caerse.  The are no accent marks in the , nosotros and vosotros forms.
