punctuation

Spanish punctuation is for the most part like English's.  However, there are a few significant differences.

In Spanish:

question marks

question marks
  yellow pin
  beginning and the end of a question
  yellow pin  inverted at the beginning of every question
  yellow pin  used at the end of every question. 
  yellow pin  If a sentence contains more than a question, the question marks frame the question only.
    For example:  ¿Qué  fecha es hoy?   (What's the date today?)
    For example:  Vamos al cine, ¿verdad?   (How are you?)

exclamation points

  yellow pin  beginning and the end of a exclamation
  yellow pin  inverted at the beginning of every exclamation
  yellow pin  used at the end of every exclamation 
  yellow pin  If a sentence contains more than the exclamation, the exclamation pointsamation points frame the exclamation only
    For example:  ¡Qué bueno!  (How good!)
    For example:  Sofia, ¡oye! Sofia, listen!!)

accent marks

Accent marks over vowels (á, é, í, ó, ú)
  yellow pin  show which syllable is stressed. 
  yellow pin  sometimes to distinguish between two words
  yellow pin  accent marks are part of spelling words
  yellow pin  When learning new words, it is important to memorize where the accent marks are as part of the spelling. 
   

la gramática  right yellow arrow  shows the emphasis is on the second "a."

   

  right yellow arrow  distinguishes the subject pronoun, you, from the possessive adjective tu, your

          está right yellow arrow  means "you are"
      estas  right yellow arrow   means "these"

tilde  

A tilde is the mark found on an ñ.  It indicates the sound of "ny" as in "canyon."
