  Spanish has many expressions in which the verb tener and corresponds to the English to be
 
 

tener _(#)__ años

to be _(#)_ years old Tengo seis años.

I am six years old.

 
 

tener prisa

to be in a hurry Tienes prisa.

You are in a hurry.

 
 

tener sueño

to be sleepy Tiene mucho sueño.

I am very tired.

 
 

tener sed

to be thirsty Tenemos sed.

We are thirsty.

 
 

tener hambre

to be hungry Tienen mucha hambre.

They are very hungry.

 
  tener calor to be hot Tengo calor. I am hot.  
  tener frío to be cold Tienes frío. You are cold.  
  tener suerte to be lucky Tenemos suerte. We are lucky.  
  tener que + inf. to have to Tienen que estudiar. They have to study.  
  tener ganas de + inf. to feel like Sabrina tiene ganas de descansar. Sabrina feels like resting.  
 
Some of these tener expressions are followed by infinitives.
  In English these expressions are formed with adjectives.   In Spanish these expressions are formed with nouns.
  Therefore, since Spanish uses nouns, a form of the adjective mucho (a lot, much) is required and NOT the adverb muy (very) as we would in English.
