Gustar literally means to be pleasing to.  It is used in a special construction to express the Spanish equivalent of the English to like.

You are literally saying it (singular) or they (plural) are pleasing to .... (me, her, him, you, us, or them).

To express who is doing the liking (or literally to whom something is pleasing), indirect pronouns are used.   For now we will be using me (to me) or te (to you).

Only two forms of the verb gustar are used frequently.  First is the singular form gusta, which is  used with only one item.   The second form is the plural form gustan, which is used with more than one item. 

 
For example:   
  gusta for singular items "like(s)  
    Me gusta la comida mexicana.

 I like Mexican food.  or literally  Mexican food is pleasing to me.

    ¿Te gusta la comida mexicana?

 Do you like Mexican food?  or literally  Is Mexican food is pleasing to you?

  gustan for plural items "like(s)  
    ¿Te gustan las clases?

 Do you like classes?  or literally  Are classes pleasing to you?

    Me gustan las clases.

 I like classes.   or literally  Classes are pleasing to me.

    ¿Te gustan la pizza y el helado?

Do you like pizza and ice cream.   or literally  Are pizza and ice cream are pleasing to you.

    Me gustan la pizza y el helado I like pizza and ice cream.   or literally  Pizza and ice cream are pleasing to me.
