Grammar points

All question words (interrogative) must carry accents.

If the question asks (you) (look for -as or -es verb ending), you would answer yo (I) (verb ending -o).

If the question asks tú y ___(you and ___) , Uds. (you, plural), vosotros(as) (you, plural)(look for -an or -en verb ending), you would answer nosotros (we)(verb ending -amos, -emos, -imos).

If the question asks él, ella, or one person by name (look for -a or -e verb ending), you would answer using the same verb form.

If the question asks ellos, ellas, or more than one person by name (look for -an or -en verb ending), you would answer using the same verb form.

Remember that following querer, pensar, ir a, and preferir will be followed by an infinitive in this situation.

  Pienso ir a la casa de mis abuelos. I plan on going to my grandparent's house.

¿Tiene Victoria planes para esta semana? Does Victoria have plans for this week?
  Va a cuidar a sus hermanos. She has to take care of my brothers and sisters.

¿Piensa él conocer el centro primero? Does he plan to get know downtown first?
  Sí, piensa conocerlo primero. Yes, he plans on getting to know it.

¿Qué quieren hacer Emilio y Julio? What do Emilio and Julio want to do?
  Quieren hacer una fiesta. They want to have a party.

¿Prefieren ellos pasear en bote o visitar el museo? Do they prefer to go boating or visit the museum?
  Prefieren pasear en bote. They prefer to go boating.

¿Tenemos planes esta noche? Do we have plans tonight?
  No, no tenemos planes. No, we don't have any plans.

¿Prefieren Uds. ir de compras? Do you prefer to go shopping.
  No, preferimos ir al cine. No, we prefer to go to the movies.

Ir + a + infinitive

We have learned that ir is the infinitive form of the verb.  It is translated to goIr + a + an infinitive is frequently followed by an infinitive to talk about future plans.
  (yo) voy (nosotros) vamos
  (tú) vas (vosotros) váis
  (él, ella) va (ellos, ellas, ustedes)  van

Querer

       

We have learned that querer is the infinitive form of the verb.  It is translated to wantQuerer is frequently followed by an infinitive to talk about plans or what you want to do.

  (yo) quiero I want

(nosotros) queremos we want  
  (tú) quieres you want (vosotros) queréis you want  
  (él, ella) quiere he, she, one person wants (ellos, ellas, Uds.) quieren they, you want  

Pensar

       

We have learned that pensar  is translated to plan or to thinkPensar + infinitive is used to talk about what you or someone else plans to do.

  (yo) quiero I want

(nosotros) queremos we want  
  (tú) quieres you want (vosotros) queréis you want  
  (él, ella) quiere he, she, one person wants (ellos, ellas, Uds.) quieren they, you want  

Preferir (ie)

     

Preferir is an infinitive.  It is translated to want.  When discussing plans, it can be used to state a preference.

  (yo) prefiero I want

(nosotros) preferimos we want  
  (tú) prefieres you want (vosotros) preferís you want  
  (él, ella) prefiere he, she, one person wants (ellos, ellas, Uds.) prefieren they, you want  

Tener (ie)

     

The infinitive tener is translated to have.  It can be used alone or in various idioms. 

  (yo) tengo I want

(nosotros) tenemos we want  
  (tú) tienes you want (vosotros) tenéis you want  
  (él, ella) tiene he, she, one person wants (ellos, ellas, Uds.) prefieren they, you want
